Once December had slipped into stunned silence, their give and take session was done. She was once one of us.
Nick raised his hand, ready to slam his fist into the wall behind December. No doubt about it. Crimson Vice was playing head games with them both. Why?
To discover the answers, he and December must best the best crime-solving company. December has four days to live. Her kidnapper has poisoned her. And do so every second, minute, and hour.
His hands shook. Time was against her. The answers to Kyle and Aubreyâs murders might possibly die with December. But Kyle and Aubrey were dead. December lived and breathed. Yet, how could he care so much for her in such a short span of time?
He set his palms on either side of her head, steadying his trembling fingers. What other reason is there, other than to remind me that life is too short?
He shifted his feet back, leaned in, and placed his forehead on hers. Pieces of his conversation with Crimsonâs messenger came at him, the hits endless, reminding him that time was against her, the one woman who held the singular answer to the haunting questions in his empty life.
âSweetheart, we need to have a long talk about everything.â
She stared at her feet.
âLook at me, December.â
She glanced up. Her emerald eyes shone with unshed tears. God, did she know sheâd die soon?
âI have a meeting Iâm late for. But afterward, Iâll head directly to your room. How about it?â
âYou canât.â She shoved him off of her and barged past. âForget the long talk and donât come by later,â she said over her shoulder as she walked away. âI need my space. From you and the mystery behind us.â
He resisted the impulse to rush after her and pull her against his body, to dip his head and murmur along the soft skin of her neck that heâd always protect her, that heâd stick by her side no matter the outcome or fallout from her truths, her secrets. Yet he couldnât. He wasnât ready to ditch the armor around his heart. Soon, December would be dead, his time with her a memory that would eventually fade.
So why did he want to make more memories with her? The boy.
When heâd watched December smiling at the little boy with happiness bright in her eyes, he began to further doubt Crimsonâs claims.
A woman who looked at a kid as though the kid meant the world to her couldnât be capable of luring teenagers to their deaths. What Crimson revealed made less sense the more time Nick spent with December.
He yanked out his cell and made the call to Crimsonâs point man, ready to tear into the guy for yanking his chain. He didnât get the satisfaction. The number had been disconnected. He ended the call and shoved his cell back into his jacket pocket. A dead end he hadnât expected. Now he couldnât even tell Crimson their mysterious serial killer had a face similar to Nickâs.
He shouldâve
